The Amity Singers of Jersey, was founded in 1973 by John Farnon, mainly to sing music from the Renaissance. But now, after more than 40 years the repertoire has broadened, and includes folk songs, Spirituals, and a lot of twentieth century sacred and secular music. The choir -of around 18 members-also sings popular jazz and blues numbers from the big band era and has been praised for its ability to move comfortably from one musical style to another and often in different languages. The Amity Singers regularly visits France during the summer months to sing in some of Brittany and Normandy’s beautiful churches. In 2003 though to celebrate their 30 th anniversary, they visited Prague, and were delighted to be able to sing with the Prague Singers who were winners of Jersey’s International Choir Festival in 2002. Upon her retirement from music teaching at Beaulieu Convent School in July 2007, Elizabeth took over the direction of the choir while her husband John now enjoys just singing! In 2023, a further change took place with Elizabeth starting to step back while William Millow is taking up more of a director role… Rehearsals: We rehearse on a Thursday evening at St. Saviour’s Parish Church at 7.45pm. Typically the choir season runs from September to June of the following year with breaks in this period
